Empowering Children with Disabilities

Location:
Priorities:

inclusive education

The initiative constructs wheelchair-accessible pit latrines in rural public schools, enabling children who rely on mobility aids to attend and remain in school. School management committees will be trained in inclusive WASH maintenance to ensure long-term functionality. To address the economic vulnerabilities faced by caregivers, the project will also support income-generating activities through micro-business training, seed funding, and quarterly coaching for caregivers. These livelihood supports are designed to improve household stability, nutrition, and access to medical care for children with disabilities.

local challenges

In Western Uganda, children living with disabilities face profound barriers to education, mobility, nutrition, and overall well-being. Many rural schools lack the infrastructure needed to accommodate students using wheelchairs, including accessible classrooms and sanitation facilities. Wheelchair-friendly latrines are virtually nonexistent, forcing many children to miss school or drop out entirely. These educational barriers are compounded by severe household poverty, worsened in recent years by economic shocks following the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, children with disabilities often receive less food and medical care than their siblings, heightening their risk of malnutrition, illness, and long-term exclusion.

every child thrives

Working with local partner, Embrace International Foundation, this project focuses on improving inclusive education and strengthening the economic resilience of families caring for children with disabilities.

By combining disability-inclusive infrastructure, locally manufactured mobility aids, and family economic empowerment, this project aims to break down systemic barriers and create a more inclusive environment where every child, regardless of ability, can access education, participate fully in their community, and thrive.
