Change for Children’s Maternal and Child Health program in Comitancillo, Guatemala targets indigenous pregnant and nursing mothers and newborns who receive home visits from indigenous, female health promoters. Mothers also receive multivitamins and nutrition counselling during pregnancy and within 24 hours of birth to promote proper hygiene and immediate and exclusive breast-feeding and adequate nutrition.
The project also provide indigenous nutrition counsellors for beneficiary families who are supplied seeds, seedlings, tools, chickens and training designed to increase agricultural diversity and yield in order to improve nutrition. Health, Hygiene and improved nutrition are also taught in schools and popularized among youth “diplomats” who will receive a diploma in nutrition education and complete a practicum at the local health post or health centre.
