Thank you, Melle (1939-2019)
We are all better having known you
And indeed the world is a better place having been touched by the grace, the reason, the perspectives, and the gentle wisdom of Melle Huizinga. A tireless supporter of Change for Children since its early days as a grassroots organization newly founded, he lent his voice and his service over the next 40 years – most recently making a special trip to stop by to share some Christmas spirit one afternoon this past December. That was Melle. Melle always showed up. Right where and when he was needed most.
Melle showed up to give his time as a board member for numerous terms over our organization’s 42-year history. Melle showed up to mentor young people in our Youth Council, sharing not only experience, but enthusiasm and a passion for justice. Melle showed up wherever necessary to advocate for rights on behalf of the oppressed, internationally and here in Canada. And when Melle showed up, people listened. He had a way of bringing comfort to a room – a quiet confidence that lent itself to reason and thoughtful discussion over animosity and conflict.
He will be missed, but he will carry on in those of us who had the honor of reading his words, hearing his adventures, and receiving his kindness.
Thank you, Melle
We, and Change for Children, are better having known you.
