In Memory of Mark Chatenay

Thank you, Mark

(1966-2019)

Mark Chatenay will be missed by many. Mark led dental brigades for Change for Children, visiting remote locations in need of dental services in Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Uganda. He involved his wonderful family, his many friends, and even his patients in campaigns supporting school construction and education projects in Nicaragua’s BOSAWAS biosphere reserve.

Many of us learned the ropes of dental brigades from Mark. We witnessed the care with which he practiced. We heard his gentle tone, but also the laughs he induced. And we felt his excitement when he unpacked a wireless printer in the remote jungle to provide family photos for local residents to cherish. Making people smile made Mark smile.

The Bosawas was a special place to Mark, and Mark was special to the people of the BOSAWAS. Having traveled there with his mother in 2008, Mark subsequently established a memoriam project through Change for Children in honour of both Olive, his mother, and Tammy, his sister, and led the effort to fund a school in their names.

Mark returned many times to the BOSAWAS, determined to connect others — family members, friends, colleagues — to the people and the place he held so close to his heart. With each new connection, Mark’s commitment to the BOSAWAS has had a ripple effect far beyond dentistry.

Mark will be missed, but his spirit lives on within the classrooms he constructed, the people he treated, and the volunteers he inspired.

Thank you, Mark.

Gifts in honour of Mark’s life will support education projects in the BOSAWAS biosphere of northern Nicaragua.
