My Voice; Our Equal Future

Five years ago, Ligia Lopez was volunteering on climate change and risk reduction projects in rural communities in Nicaragua, while at the same time building her skills in the field of Communications. Today, her role as Community Manager and Content Strategist in our Technology for Sustainable Water Resource Governance project is a perfect marriage of her passions! Ligia works with Change for Children’s partner, SIMAS, to train Community Water Committees in the use of communications technology for water management monitoring and reporting, and for water rights advocacy.

“We are jointly working to change people’s lives and achieve sustainable development on a daily basis.”   -Ligia Lopez

Ligia is not only a volunteer, a communicator, and a passionate promoter of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), she is also a mentor. As a 2020 Youth Champion in the Inter-Council Network’s Spur Change program that brings together the experience and passion of young adults from around the world who are skilled in public engagement, who are committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and who are leaders in their communities, she is a role model — a model of success, of strength, and of ambition — for young women in the communities she visits.

“Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so they can picture themselves doing those jobs someday.”   – Sally Ride

Ligia’s Spur Change youth engagement initiative is aimed at encouraging young people to take action at a community level – to implement their ideas, to find alliances, to use their voices.

And while Ligia’s focus area is the environment, on International Day of the Girl, we imagine a world where adolescent girls grow into confident women, asserting their power as change-makers in all areas — a world where girls are energized and recognized, counted and invested in.

Role models are mobilizing girls the world over to make it a better and more equal place, boldly demanding action against discrimination, against violence, against poor learning opportunities — against inequality.
Be a role model. Be like Ligia.  #GenerationEquality
