Safe Water for All Seasons
December 16, 2024
Yuri Betania, from the community of Los Reyes, Nicaragua, is a mother of four. Until recently, Yuri (with a baby in one arm and bucket in the other) and her her three young girls (carrying water containers proportionate to their respective sizes) made daily trips to collect water.
During our recent visit, however, she shows us around her home with much excitement. Not unlike the way many of us will soon gather to celebrate the season, Yuri is surrounded by her nieces and nephews and extended family. Joy abounds on this day as they celebrate access to water at their own home – something so fundamental, yet still so elusive for too many.
The recent rehabilitation of her own community’s water well now serves the local school, the church, and the 35 households in Los Reyes, securing their right to clean water. After many years of carrying water from an hour away from home, Yuri and her family (and the entire community!) are very grateful for this new change in their lives.
“My children feel the joy; they can take baths happily every morning before going to school and are no longer exposed to the danger or the struggle of hauling water long distances. Now, with the water well so close to our house functioning again, I feel blessed and very grateful to all the brothers and sisters from Canada who have made it possible for this benefit to reach our community.”
